Paris 2024 to ban single-use plastic

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced the plan to ban single-use plastic when it holds the 2024 Olympic Games as part of efforts to tackle a global plastic pollution crisis.

Visitors to temporary Olympics competition sites in the French capital will be admitted only without plastic bottles. Coca-Cola, TOP Sponsor of the Olympic Games, will distribute its products in re-usable glass bottles and more than 200 soda fountains, which will be redeployed after the games. Re-usable cups will also be used for refreshments during the Olympics marathon.

Organisers of the Paris Olympics have said they want to halve the carbon footprint compared to previous Summer Games in Rio in 2016 and London in 2012. The Tokyo Olympics last year took place behind closed doors due to the COVID pandemic.

The U.N. Environment Programme issued a report on May 16 saying countries could reduce plastic pollution by 80% by 2040 using existing technologies and making major policy changes.

The 2nd ANOC World Beach Games Bali 2023 will also drastically reduce the use of single use plastic. Thanks to the partnership with the Bluewater Group, already the Chef de Mission Seminar in the end of April 2023 was hosted with no single use plastic bottles, being the hydration of participants guaranteed by super modern water purifiers and stainless-steel reusable bottles. ANOC is also joining efforts with the NGO Marine Biodiversity Foundation to protect and restore the coral ecosystem in the Nusa Dua Beach, main cluster of the Games. ANOC is adopting coral gardens there until 2026.

As sustainability is a key pillar of ANOC´s strategic plan, the organization is signatory of the Sport for Climate Action Framework, encouraging all NOC community to tackle together climate change. A series of webinars in partnership with The Toolbox were carried during the last few months, enabling National Olympic Committees to plan, deliver and report their sustainability actions and results. As part of the commitment to reduce carbon footprint, ANOC has been compensating all travel emissions of its General Assemblies since 2019.

In partnership with the United Nations Clean Seas Program. ANOC is also engaged in advocating and acting against plastic pollution in the ocean.
