ANOC Award winner Ireen Wust becomes first athlete to win individual Olympic gold at 5 consecutive Winter Games
The Netherlands’ legendary speed skater, Ireen Wust, wrote her name in the record books on Monday as she won gold in the women’s speed skating 1500m and became the first athlete to ever win individual Olympic gold medals at five consecutive Winter Games.
Wust’s gold in Beijing takes her total medal tally to a whopping 12 with her first gold medal coming back in Torino 2006. She also shows no sign of slowing down as she set a new Olympic record of 1:53.28 in the 1500m today. Her victory saw her overcome Japan’s world record holder Takagi Miho who finished in 1:53.72 and her compatriot Antoinette de Jong who won the bronze medal in 1:54.82.
Wust was awarded the Best Female Athlete of Sochi 2014 at the very first ANOC Awards in Bangkok in 2014.
