Team USA win historic Olympic surfing gold
Team USA claimed a piece of history on 27 July when Carissa Moore became the first ever Olympic surfing champion.
It is the first time that surfing has been included in the Olympic Games and the sport has got off to an excellent start in Tokyo.
Moore won gold by overcoming South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag. The approaching Tropical Storm Nepartak brought excellent waves for the world’s best surfers.
Speaking about her gold medal, Moore said:
“It’s quite heavy (the medal). I’m very proud and honoured.”
“It’s been a crazy couple of days, a little bit of a rollercoaster of emotions just trying to figure out the break, find my rhythm, learning how to trust myself without my family here.
“I feel super blessed, super fortunate. It’s been an incredible experience.”
Silver medallist, Buitendag, added:
“I surprised myself.” said the South African. “It was a wonderful experience. I think it was one of the most wonderful weeks of my life. I will never forget it.”
