“RINGS” National Training Workshop in Greece about strategic planning

With a large participation and many useful conclusions, a workshop on “Strategic planning for the future of sports” was held at the Hellenic Olympic Committee, addressed to the Sports Federations – members of the HOC.

The workshop was held within the framework of the “RINGS” project to which the Hellenic Olympic Committee is a partner together with 10 other National Olympic Committees of Europe.

During the workshop, the RINGS programme was presented by Heidi Pekkola, RINGS Project Manager and Deputy Director of the Office of the European Olympic Committees in the European Union. This was followed by the presentation of Dr Norbert Schütte from the Department of Sport Economics, Sport Sociology and Sport History of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz who is the co-author of the handbook “RINGS – Road towards innovative governance of NOCs and Grass Roots Sport Organisations”. Dr Norbert Schütte referred to the advantages of strategic planning in sports and analysed the challenges and obstacles presented in its implementation.

The workshop was opened by the Secretary General of the Hellenic Olympic Committee who, among other things, pointed out: “Strategic planning in sports organisations is not particularly widespread, but it can significantly help its development. It may be that in sports everything is about what happens on the field of play, but the right foundations are laid with the right planning, analysis and programming. Furthermore, strategic planning defines what an organisation is, why it exists, what purposes it serves and how its continued survival is ensured. The HOC will always participate in similar programmes and will at the same time motivate the Sports Federations, to promote and develop sports on a scientific basis in order to improve its governance”.

The RINGS programme aims to develop and modernise the strategic planning of the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) in Europe and is implemented by the Office of the European Olympic Committees in the European Union. It is co-financed by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ Sport programme.

Vassia Mazanitou was responsible for the organisation of the day on behalf of the HOC, and among others, Olympians Evi Moraitidou and Dimitris Mougios, who represented the Hellenic Swimming Federation and the Hellenic Rowing Federation respectively, participated.
