NOC Qatar celebrates 45 years of excellence
The Qatar Olympic Committee celebrated its 45th Anniversary on Tuesday, May 28. The QOC was established on March 14, 1979.
President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, presided over the ceremony held at the Fairmont Hotel.
The ceremony was also attended by HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, Minister of Sports and Youth, Gulf and Qatari sports leaders and representatives of National Olympic Committees from West Asia.
The ceremony began with a film tracing the history and achievements of the QOC over the past 45 years. Sheikh Joaan then honoured Team Qatar athletes who had starred in the first Gulf Youth Games UAE 2024.
QOC Secretary General HE Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, in an opening address, said: “The Qatar Olympic Committee has achieved great successes in various field since its inception in 1979 and continues to do so, thanks to God and the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the country.”
Buenain continued: “The efforts of the QOC have also contributed to strengthening Qatar’s sporting position on the world stage through the organisation of major events and tournaments in various sports.
“The latest of these was the World Aquatics Championships – Doha 2024, which was held in February and saw unparalleled success, adding to the series of Qatari strides at the level of organising world championships.”
The QOC Secretary General also affirmed the QOC’s firm commitment to work according to a clear vision and goal. This goal is to be a leading country that brings the world together through sustainable sports development, and to drive this progress through its strategy 2023-2030.
The strategy aims at achieving three main goals: ensuring sports excellence, promoting Olympic culture and achieving comprehensive sports development in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
“We affirm that we are moving forward to achieve our goals of spreading sports in society, investing in the sports heritage that has resulted from previous achievements, and continuing to aim for sporting feats to honour the name of Qatar in various forums,” Buenain added.
One of the most prominent achievements over the last 45 years has been winning eight Olympic medals – two gold, two silver and four bronze.
