National Olympic Committee of Ecuador
The academy of the Ecuadoran Olympic committee recently signed an agreement on Olympic education with the country’s Department of Education whereby both institutions agreed to give physical education teachers training in Olympic philosophy.
The signature ceremony, held at the seat of the Department of Education in Quito, was attended by economist Augusto Espinosa Andrade, EOC president Augusto Morán Nuques, and Olympic academy president Carlos Manzur.
According to Manzur “the idea of the treaty is to allow us to deliver lectures to teachers during work hours to familiarize them with the true values of Olympism and its philosophy so that they, in turn, can convey them to their elementary and high school students. The Department of Education will have teachers trained at the Olympic academy of the Ecuadoran Olympic Committee at its disposal to teach Olympic philosophy, sports and other subjects in its classrooms.”
According to the president of the Olympic academy, this has been a long standing aspiration in the institution but today, under the leadership of Mr. Augusto Morán Nuques, “it has finally come true”.
“The Olympic academy is the pedagogical branch of the Olympic Committee and has existed almost since its inception in the 1980s. It has always strived to get involved in the formal education system, and now, with the support of the Department of Education, we have succeeded in fulfilling this old dream,” Manzur said.
The president of the Olympic committee, Augusto Morán, emphasized the fact that “we would be delighted to have the formal course load of physical education students include an ‘Olympic Education’ class. The Department of Education is presently implementing and developing a series of extracurricular activities for public high schools where groups of instructors will be trained who will then animate afterschool Olympic activities. The EOC and its academy will begin to train the people who will be in charge of those activities starting in November.”
