MALTESE OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ATHLETES’ COMMISSION HOSTS ATHLETES’ SEMINAR

The Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) Athletes’ Commission held its first ever Athletes’ seminar in San Gwann, Malta, which aimed to share relevant knowledge and empower the athletes, as well as provide them with a forum to get more involved in the Olympic Movement.

Athletes’ Commission Chair Eleanor Bezzina led the seminar alongside fellow members Matthew Abela and Sascha Genovese, which was attended by athletes aged 14 and above. Bezzina expressed her satisfaction at the outcome of the seminar, which featured important discussions across a variety of subjects.

Among the topics discussed were Safeguarding from Harassment and Abuse, which was presented by Andrew Azzopardi and Carly Zarb. Gabi Calleja provided a report on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sex Characteristics as a Human Right. Media in Sport was presented by MOC Media Director Maria Vella-Galea and Joanna Camilleri, while MOC Director of Sport, Charlene Attard, spoke about the Games of the Small States of Europe, Sports Journalism and Scholarship opportunities.

During the seminar, tokens of appreciation were presented to athletes who won medals in events over the summer, including Katryna Esposito (bronze, judo, Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022), Matthew Galea Soler (bronze, athletics, European Youth Olympic Festival Banská Bystrica 2022) and Elaine Genovese and Francesca Curmi (silver, tennis, Mediterranean Games Oran 2022).

MOC Secretary General Kevin Azzopardi was also present for the seminar and emphasised the vital role of the MOC in supporting its athletes and highlighted how seminars such as this are developed to give a greater voice to athletes.
