Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards 2024 attract over 100 nominations

Public voting for the Cathay 2024 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards closed on Sunday, March 9 – and over 100 athletes and teams were nominated.

The annual awards are organised by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and recognise outstanding athletes and teams from the previous year.

The President of the SF&OC, Mr. Timothy Fok, commented: “2024 was a fruitful year for Hong Kong athletes. Team Hong ‍Kong, China wrote a new page in the city’s sports history at the Paris Olympics by bringing home two gold and two bronze medals.

“Our athletes also accomplished exciting breakthroughs in various competitions; their hard work has polished Hong Kong’s gilded signboard at the international sports stage. The Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards provides an opportunity for the public to know more about our athletes, and cheer them on by casting a vote.”

Mr. Fok added: “There will be a series of mega sports events in 2025. At the recent Asian Winter Games in Harbin, Team Hong Kong, China achieved its best-ever results.

“The World Games, the National Games co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao and the Asian Youth Games will take place one after another in the coming months. SF&OC will continue to fully support our athletes.”

The SF&OC President was speaking at a recent event to promote public voting for the awards, held at the New Town Plaza in Sha Tin.

The officiating guests also included Ms. Vivian Chan, Head of Marketing Communications of Cathay; Mr. Edgar Yang, Honorary Secretary General of SF&OC; Dr. Karl Kwok, Vice President of SF&OC and Chairperson of the Awards Organizing Committee; and Ms. Camay Lee, Assistant Director (Leisure Services) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Ms. Vivian Chan said: “This marks the sixth year that Cathay has had the privilege of being the title sponsor of the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, encouraging our local athletes and recognizing their excellence, determination and unwavering effort.

“With our deep roots in Hong Kong for nearly eight decades, Cathay is committed to making a lasting impact on the local community, with a particular focus on promoting the development of youth, sports, arts and culture.

“In the future, we will continue to empower our homegrown athletes to shine on the world stage and to bring more world-class sporting, cultural and entertainment mega-events to Hong Kong.”

This year’s Awards received a total of 116 nominations from 53 National Sports Associations in four categories: male athlete of the year, female athlete of the year, team only sport award and sports combination award.

The results will be announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on April 17, 2025.
