French men’s rugby sevens team dance their way to first gold for Olympic hosts

France won their first Olympic gold of Paris 2024 with a convincing 28-7 victory over defending champions Fiji in the men’s rugby sevens.

Insipired by rugby phenomenon, Antoine Dupont, the French brough Fiji’s run of 17 straight wins across three consecutive Games to an end.

South Africa took bronze as they beat Australia.

Commenting on winning France’s first Olympic gold, Dupont said: “We knew we represented rugby but also every sport. When you walk into the Olympic village, you feel patriotic. We wanted to start the Games in the best way possible.”

After winning gold, the French team returned to the field to deliver a choreographed dance routine to the delight of a packed out Stade de France.
