Finnish Olympic Committee aims to promote exercise among the elderly

The Finnish Olympic Committee is a partner in the Inspiring Active People to Move project carried out by the Age Institute, which aims to activate people over 65 for a more active everyday life and for self-directed or guided exercise.

The Ikiliikkuja campaign, which started in April, continues with the communication campaign implemented in week 34. Sports federations and sports clubs can use the campaign to communicate their own sport and activities to the elderly. Of course, the campaign week can be considered as a start for the continuous communication of sports and clubs throughout the fall, because the image of sports clubs as moving seniors is still quite new.

More and more sports clubs also offer services for the elderly

After finishing their working career, many people long for something active. Many seniors may find a new sport or a meaningful way to exercise and maintain their health in a sports club. In addition, the club often offers a refreshing sense of community. Exercise and hobbies are the third most important factors influencing happiness among people aged 55–84, after good health and good relationships.

More and more sports clubs also offer activities for the elderly. Clubs can get new exercisers and members from the elderly, as well as much-needed volunteers for various roles. Many seniors are able to exercise during the day when there are free spaces. With age, skills and experience have also been accumulated, which I would like to use in voluntary tasks, for example. The elderly are a great resource for the club!
