The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) established the Commissions and Working Groups on 9 December 2013 during the ANOC Executive Council meeting.
Each year the Commissions and Working Groups are given a one-year mandate, with a strong emphasis on delivering tangible and measurable results for the benefit of ANOC’s stakeholders. The groups meet throughout the year before presenting their initiatives to the ANOC General Assembly towards the end of the year.
At the start of each year, ANOC announces the Commissions and their composition, drawing from the significant experience and expertise that exists across the global NOC family.
In 2019, ANOC agreed to reduce the number of members per Commission in order to ensure they can work as effectively and productively as possible. Each of the Continental Associations was also asked to put forward nominations for the Commissions to ensure representation across each continent. Four new Commissions were also added – Ethics Commission, Gender Equity Commission, Electoral Commission and Culture & Education Commission. The Modernisation Commission was discontinued having fulfilled its mandate.
In February 2023, the Sustainability Commission was created reflecting ANOC’s commitment to advocate for and deliver tangible sustainable action.
