Sustainability at the heart of ANOC General Assembly Cascais 2024

With the ANOC General Assembly Cascais 2024 fast-approaching, ANOC and the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) are working together to minimise the event’s impact on the environment and ensure it can serve as a platform for sustainable action.

Over the last six months, ANOC and COP have already implemented a number of sustainable initiatives. In February, the two organisations contributed to the planting of one hectare of native trees to support the offsetting of carbon emissions. In total 10,000 trees will be planted which will contribute to COP’s ongoing Portuguese Olympic Forest project, part of the IOC’s Olympic Forest Network. A beach clean on the Carcavelos Beach in Cascais was also held in June in partnership with Olympic Partner, P&G, and Associação Bandeira Azul.

While delegates are in Cascais, electric and hybrid vehicles will be used for essential travel to minimise carbon emissions. Through a partnership with Refood Cascais, food waste will be eliminated with food distributed to families in the local community.

As at previous General Assemblies, water fountains will be readily available and delegates will be able to refill special biodegradable Good Bottles produced by the The Mirpuri Foundation. In the official hotels only glass bottles will be served.

ANOC is also exploring options for branding material from the General Assembly to be repurposed supporting a circular economy.

Sustainability is a key agenda item during the General Assembly itself and will feature a number of reports and updates as ANOC uses the event as a platform to share best practice.  The presentation will begin with an introduction emphasizing ANOC’s sustainability vision. Following this, there will be an overview of ANOC’s sustainability initiatives and carbon emission results from 2023 and 2024, along with a report on the sustainability efforts in Cascais related to the General Assembly. Updates on IOC sustainability initiatives and the Sports for Climate Action framework will be provided, along with insights into the Sports for Nature framework, showcasing a case study from a National Olympic Committee. The presentation will also introduce the Carbon Emission Tool developed through the Ocean project and recognize the Switzerland and Mauritius  NOCs who received the IOC Climate Action Award. Finally, the ANOC Sustainability Dashboard will be presented and NOCs will learn more about ANOC’s partnership with SeaTheFuture and the opportunities open to them to engage.
