ANOC reiterates commitment to sustainability on World Environment Day
ANOC today reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring sustainability is at the heart of its operations and events as it celebrated World Environment Day.
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June and this year is focused on raising awareness on the global efforts to #Beat Plastic Pollution. It comes ahead of World Ocean Day on 8 June which looks to protect at least 30% of our lands, waters, and ocean by 2030 (30×30). On the combat to plastic pollution in the oceans, since 2022 ANOC is partner to the United Nations Environment Programme’s Clean Seas Campaign, whose aim is to fight against marine plastic litter.
ANOC has pledged to significantly reduce its use of plastic as part of its ANOC Sustainability Plan and Sustainability Pledge which was approved by the General Assembly in November 2022.
At the Chef de Mission Seminar for the ANOC World Beach Games Bali 2023, ANOC partnered with Bluewater – a supplier of revolutionary water purifiers –to drastically reduce single-use plastic at the event. All attending Chef de Missions were supplied with a Bali 2023 Bluewater reusable stainless steel and glass bottle and have access to numerous Bluewater purifiers at the seminar. ANOC is in discussions to put the initiative in place for the Games.
ANOC has also partnered with Marine Biodiversity Foundation (CMBF) a local coral conservation project in Bali until 2026 to leave a lasting legacy in the Nusa Dua Beach, one of the two clusters of the Games. As part of the cooperation there will be planting and maintenance of a coral garden, with coral fragments being planted on behalf of each of the participating NOC. ANOC will also arrange coral field visits, as it did during the Chef de Mission Seminar, learn more about the threats they are facing and the work being done to protect them.
These initiatives form part of the broader commitment for ANOC to achieve a number of key sustainability targets as well as support NOCs develop their own sustainability initiatives.
To assist in this regard, ANOC signed a partnership with The Toolbox which provides NOCs with full access to an eight-step framework designed to enable NOCs to create and implement sustainability programmes aligned with recognised standards. The Toolbox is available to NOCs in English, French and Spanish and can be accessed here. Over the last nine months the Toolbox has presented a series of practical webinars to support NOCs to deliver against the commitments of the Sports for Climate Action framework.
