ANOC publishes Sustainability Progress Report 2020-2023
ANOC has published its Sustainability Progress Report 2020-2023 as part of its commitment to providing greater transparency around its sustainability initiatives and environmental impact.
The report, which can be found here, outlines ANOC’s overall sustainability objectives in accordance with the ANOC Sustainability Pledge, describes the sustainability initiatives and programmes ANOC has delivered up to December 2023, and provides insight into ANOC’s carbon emission measurements for the years 2019 through 2022. The report also outlines ANOC’s future strategic steps designed to advance ANOC’s sustainability efforts.
The report reflects ANOC’s commitment to regular reporting on its sustainability performance and measuring its carbon emissions to identify the largest emission sources and implement emission mitigation measures.
As a signatory of the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, ANOC has committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 (with 2019 as the base year of comparison), and to reach net zero by 2040, not only by carbon credit compensation, but effective emission reduction. Earlier this month, the ANOC Executive Council approved ANOC joining the Race to Zero –a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, investors to join the largest ever alliance committed to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest.
With the newly created ANOC Sustainability Commission, ANOC is also aiming to further enhance its sustainability efforts and establish closer cooperation with the different Olympic Movement stakeholders, including the IOC, Continental Associations, NOCs and International Federations, besides the partnerships with international organizations and NGOs already in place.
As ever, ANOC aims to share best practice among the NOCs and encourages NOCs to develop their own sustainability strategies and policies.
In 2024, ANOC has identified a number of key sustainability initiatives including becoming part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Sports for Nature Framework, to develop and launch the ANOC GHG Emissions reduction plan 2024-2030, expand the ANOC Sustainability Programme, and developing, launching and delivering the ANOC Green Procurement Policy.
