ANOC mourns loss of ANOC Executive Council Member Kevan Gosper
It is with great sadness that ANOC has learned that ANOC Executive Council member Kevan Gosper has passed away at the age of 90.
Gosper made an enormous contribution to the NOC family and Olympic Movement over the course of a career which began as a two-time Olympian and lasted for 70 years.
Gosper competed at Melbourne 1956 and Rome 1960 winning a silver medal in the 4×400 metres relay in Melbourne.
He was elected an IOC Member in 1977 and served two terms as IOC Vice President from 1990-1994 and 1999-2003. He also twice served on the Executive Board from 1986-1990 and 1995-1999.
Gosper’s storied career in the NOC family began as Australian Olympic Committee President between 1985 and 1990. He went on to serve as President of the Oceania National Olympic Committees between 1989 and 2009 and Vice President of ANOC from 1989. He would later serve the ANOC Executive Council as a member and chair of the ANOC Electoral Commission.
ANOC President Robin Mitchell and ANOC Secretary General Gunilla Lindberg said:
“Kevan dedicated his life to port and he will be sorely missed by all of us around the world. He contributed so much not just in Australia but throughout Oceania and the wider Olympic Movement. As an Olympic medallist, who went onto lead his NOC, ONOC and serve as a Vice President of the IOC, ANOC and the OCOG of his home Games, his impact on sport cannot be understated. He has been an ever-present within ANOC over the last 30 years and we will not just miss his insightful contributions but his energy, enthusiasm and humour which he was known and loved for, and which lit up any meeting he was in. Our thoughts are his with family and friends during this very difficult time.”
