ANOC Partners with SeaTheFuture to Champion Sustainability and Ocean Protection

The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) is proud to announce a strategic partnership with SeaTheFuture, a leading conservation organization committed to protecting the ocean, underscoring ANOC’s ongoing commitment to minimising impact on the environment.

Through this collaboration, which can be found here, ANOC will promote SeaTheFuture’s innovative and impactful sustainability projects to National Olympic Committees (NOCs) across the globe. This will serve to encourage Olympic stakeholders to take active steps in contributing to the preservation of the ocean and its species. SeaTheFuture’s projects provide concrete solutions with long-term impact to some of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges; primarily the preservation of ocean biodiversity and the restoration of critical habitats.

ANOC President Robin Mitchell, said:

“Sustainability is a key focus for ANOC and through this partnership with SeaTheFuture, we are reinforcing our commitment to promoting environmental protection and actionable solutions. We have a responsibility to use our platform to raise awareness and equip NOCs with the information they need to make positive change. NOCs already do so much to promote meaningful sustainable practices and by sharing and exchanging knowledge, together we can make a meaningful contribution to the preservation of our planet’s ocean and environment.”

ANOC will encourage NOCs to become signatories of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Sports for Nature framework. By doing so, NOCs will commit to sustainable practices, with SeaTheFuture acting as a partner to help them achieve their environmental goals and contribute to preserving nature.

SeaTheFuture’s Managing Director, Assunção Loureiro, added:

“We are thrilled to partner with ANOC to amplify our mission of protecting the ocean. By working with NOCs around the world, we can create a powerful network of partners who are committed to supporting sustainability initiatives and ensuring that future generations of athletes can compete in a healthy, thriving natural environment.”

This is the latest partnership ANOC has engaged in under its Sustainability Strategy. In April 2024, ANOC signed up to the IUCN’s Sports for Nature Framework and became a UN Sports for Climate Action Framework signatory in 2020.

Other initiatives include partnering with the Blue Harmony Coral Preservation Project (BHCPP) to plant coral fragments at the Nusa Dua Beach, in Bali/Indonesia in 2023, and a second coral garden in Lipah Beach also in Bali in September 2024. Also the planting of one hectare of native trees Quinta do Pisão in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park with the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP), as well as the partnership with the Mirpuri Foundation and the GoodBottle, a biopolymer and biodegradable bottle that will be used in the ANOC General Assembly in Cascais in October 2024. The sustainability activities before the event in Portugal also included a beach cleaning in Carcavelos Beach in Cascais, in partnership with TOP partner P&G and Bandeira Azul NGO.
