ANOC mourns loss of Portuguese Olympic Committee President José Manuel Constantino

ANOC is deeply saddened to learn that José Manuel Constantino, President of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) has passed away at the age of 74.

Mr Constantino served COP since 2013 having previously led the Portuguese Sports Institute.

He had extensive experience in education both at University and primary level across 30 years. He wrote several books and countless articles on sport and was recognised with titles of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Porto, in 2016, and by the University of Lisbon, in 2023.

In the 1960s Mr Constantino was a federated football player for Leões de Santarém. It was not until the 1980s he became technical secretary of the board of Sport Algés e Dafundo, later becoming an advisor to the board of the Portuguese Weightlifting Federation.
