Germany’s Isabell Werth becomes first Olympian to win medals at 7 Olympic Games

Germany won gold in the team dressage on 3 August, giving the NOC their third consecutive victory in the event and team member Isabell Werth her 13th Olympic medal.

Werth becomes the first Olympian to win medals across seven Olympic Games over a 32 year period, the longest era of any Olympian. Her 13 Olympic medals, including eight golds, put her second on the all-time list for medals won by a female Olympian alongside USA’s Katie Ledecky. Only Larisa Latynina has won more medals with 18.

“This was the closest finish ever I would say, and it was so exciting and we are really happy. Jessica (Von Bredow-Werndl) brought it to the end for us,” Werth said.

“We went to pick up our horses for the medals and then we didn’t know the score, but they shouted ‘we got it’, so that was a thriller.”

“I’m really, really happy because Wendy(her horse) was fantastic and like I said before, when I don’t make mistakes, she won’t. I had a little mistake at the centre line but I think at the whole picture, everything was perfect.”

“Never before has there been this beautiful (a) venue. I have to say this view to the castle is just so incredible, and I’m very happy and enjoying these Olympics.”
