Torres Gil makes history for Argentina in men’s BMX freestyle

Torres Gil’s exceptional first run in the BMX freestyle final was enough to see off his fellow competitors to win Argentina’s first individual medal in cycling and the first medal of Paris 2024 for his country.

Gil managed an impressive score of 94.82 in his first run which could not be beaten by World champion Kieran Reilly of Great Britain who finished with silver and Anthony Jeanjean who won France’s first Olympic medal in BMX freestyle with bronze.

Gil’s gold is also the first for Argentina in any sport since Rio 2016.

“So much feeling, it’s hard to explain,” Gil said after the competition. “I am trying to endure the moment and not cry because I am a person who doesn’t like to show his feelings too much.

“It’s crazy that I am here at the Olympics, the biggest competition on the planet – I know I had to come here and give it my all.

“It means everything, my life – all the work from my life – four years working with the team.”
