ANOC Sustainability Commission meets online

The ANOC Sustainability Commission met today for its second online meeting led by Chair Victoria Cabezas from the Spanish National Olympic Committee.

The meeting began with a brief presentation from the ANOC staff on the ANOC Sustainability Progress Report 2020-2023, which is part of the organization’s commitments to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, and includes carbon measurement reports as well as status updates on the seven key objectives. The report also outlined the commitments that ANOC needs to focus on during 2024, including the inclusion of other Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) in its actions and delivering the final carbon emissions reduction strategy 2024-2030.

There was also a report on the sustainability initiatives currently planned for the ANOC General Assembly in Cascais, Portugal in October 2024, which will include SDGs other than climate. The ANOC team also reported on the planting of 10,000 trees to support the mitigation of the emissions to be generated by the event later in the year.

The chairpersons of the five Continental Associations’ sustainability commissions were invited to attend the meeting, as well as the International Olympic Committee Sustainability Senior Manager Mrs. Julie Duffus. The intent was for all parties to report on their actions and plans, so there can be coordinated and more effective action to support the sustainability development of the National Olympic Committees.

Mrs. Duffus was also joined by Mrs. Jana Janatova, who jointly presented the Sports for Nature Framework from IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), which the commission decided to recommend to the ANOC Executive Council for ANOC to become a signatory.
