John Coates awarded Contribution to Olympic Movement at ANOC Awards 2021

IOC Vice President and Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates was awarded the Contribution to the Olympic Movement award at the ANOC Awards 2021 in recognition of the significant role he has played within the Olympic family and in the successful delivery of Tokyo 2020.

As Chair of the Coordination Commission for Tokyo 2020, Mr Coates was intimately involved in working with the Organising Committee to ensure the Games could be held safely. The outbreak of COVID-19 presented unprecedented challenges for the Games, but through excellent cooperation between the IOC, Organising Committee and Japanese authorities the Games was a great success. Tokyo 2020 inspired hope and brought the world joy at a very difficult time.

Mr Coates was presented the award by Acting ANOC President Robin Mitchell and IOC President Thomas Bach, in front of nearly 150 NOCs at the amphitheatre of the Creta Maris Beach Resort.

Speaking as he accepted the award, Mr Coates said:

“This is a very special award in front of all my colleagues in front of the National Olympic Committees and is made even more special by the fact it’s presented by my dear friend, President of the IOC, and my very dear friend from many many years working together Robin Mitchell of Oceania. Thank you everyone.”
